Review: Year Zero

Dude. This book is so funny. It’s like Hitchhiker’s Guide to Galaxy but with music instead of the demolition of Earth. Apparently the Earth isn’t far into its evolution. Except for music. Earthlings make music that completely outdoes anything else in the galaxy. So much so that they restarted the galactic calendar based on when they started listening to it. And now the galaxy owes us because of our copyright laws. Like big time owes us, and they obviously aren’t happy about it. So starts the book, and the hilarity of aliens and lawyers, and bad puns and a ton […]

Genevieve Reviews: Golden Son

It took me a long, long time to write a review for this book because it left me with such a book hangover. It was very, very good, and it was so easy to get caught up in the story. But the ending was just crushing. Really good. But crushing. Golden Son picks up two years after Red Rising ended. Darrow is just finishing up at the Academy, which is sort of like the Institute from the first book, only with space ships. And like the Institute, the Academy isn’t lessons in class so much as it is war games […]

Review: Hounded

Oh my gosh, I loved this book. This is another example where someone should have shoved this book into my face and told me I had to read it. I feel so late to the party! But that just means I can spend hours getting caught up without having to wait for the next book to be released. There is so much humour in this book, and it’s of the sarcastic snark variety that I love. I think every character gets off at least one good line, and both Atticus and Oberon zing them off almost constantly. It’s hilarious. Speaking […]

Genevieve Reviews: Red Rising

This is a gritty, dark story. There are no punches pulled in this novel. It makes The Hunger Games look like a sweet, bedtime story. I’ve read quite a few YA dystopian novels, and this one blows them all away. It’s more like Game of Thrones than any young adult novel I’ve read. Red Rising is definitely one of those books that pulled me in and took over my head for a few days. The book is about Darrow, who gets recruited to join a rebellion after the death of a loved one. He’s the strong and silent type, but […]
