Review: Red Rising

This was a brutal book. Violent, but brilliant. I’m very certain the only YA element is that the main character (and most others) are in their teens, but what they go through is definitely an adult hell. What they have to do is horrible, and nothing anyone should have to suffer, let alone a teenager. I’m not convinced this should be listed as a YA book, but regardless, the story is amazing. It took me a long, long time to write a review for this book because it left me with such a book hangover. It was very, very good, and it was so easy to get caught up in the story. But the ending was just crushing. Really good. But crushing. Golden Son picks up two years after Red Rising ended. This is a gritty, dark story. There are no punches pulled in this novel. It makes The Hunger Games look like a sweet, bedtime story. I’ve read quite a few YA dystopian novels, and this one blows them all away. It’s more like Game of Thrones than any young adult novel I’ve read.
