Review: Ashes of Life + Giveaway

Before I start my review, I’d just like to apologize to the authors and publisher for missing my original posting date. Thanks for being accommodating with a new date. This book is amazing. I went into it thinking it was going to be really sad, but this turned out to be a beautiful romance. Yes, there were some sad and troubling parts, but the overall feel was hope and love. This caught me off guard, but was the best kind of surprise. This was a powerful story about love, and the power of family, and really highlighted that family is […]

Interview: J.P. Choquette + Giveaway

Thank you, first of all, Sarah, for having me as a guest on your site—very exciting! If you had to describe your book Twitter syle (140 characters or less), what would you say? Hmmm, if I were to describe ‘Subversion’ Twitter-style, I’d post someone else’s review (self- promotion isn’t my strong suit): “Grab a quilt & a cup of tea; once you start this book, you won’t want to put it down~explores the darker side of human nature, while renewing your faith in humanity.” What books have influenced your writing? As far as finding my rhythm and “voice” as a […]

Guest post from Debby Grahl: Do You Believe in Ghosts? + Giveaway

Out of the corner of your eye have you ever caught a glimpse of something, and then when you turn it’s gone? Have you heard creaks and bangs that can’t be explained? Has the temperature around you suddenly become chilled? Do you believe in ghosts? I do! Since ghosts play a significant part in my new book, The Silver Crescent, I thought I would share some of my ghostly encounters with you. Ghost and witches have to be the most fun and versatile creatures to write about. Your ghost can be solid or transparent, look perfectly normal or hideous, be […]

Review: Shadows Have Gone

This third book in the series picked up immediately after the second book ended. It jumped right into the action, but there were enough recaps spread out over the first few chapters to help me remember everything important from the previous books. This story surprised me with how dark it was. There was quite a bit of death in this book, including some characters that I felt I knew and liked. It was powerful, and really highlight how uncertain and unsafe a post catastrophe world would be. One thing that I really enjoyed in this book was the sense of […]

Review: Doctor Death + Giveaway

This was an engrossing, very Gothic feeling story. It started as a straight forward historical based murder mystery, and ventured into magical realism, and almost paranormal. Looking back, it’s easy to see the directions the story took, but while reading, I couldn’t guess what would happen next, and honestly, I was too captivated to stop to speculate. Madeleine was a delightfully intelligent young woman who knew what she wanted to do with her life, and it didn’t include being the stereotypical woman of her time. She was smart enough to realize that she couldn’t be straightforward with her interests and […]

4 Year Blogiversary Reflective and Giveaway

My blogiversary snuck up on me this year. I totally forgot about it until earlier this week. Workaday Reads turns 4 years old on Feb 16! That’s 4 years, 700 books (technically 697 but you’ll excuse me for rounding) and 1728 posts. Sounds like a celebration is in order. I decided to celebrate with a giveaway. Obviously. But first, a little reflection on the past year. In the past (Year 1, Year 2, Year 3), I did a formal style reflection, but this year I’m not doing it. Mostly because I feel like I could copy and paste from last […]

Interview: Sharon Lynn Fisher + Giveaway

If you had to describe your book Twitter style (140 characters or less), what would you say? Love triangle between a parapsychologist, FBI agent & energy vampire from a parallel Earth. Black ops, quantum physics & dimensional travel! Maybe that should be “among.” Oh well, you get the idea! What books have influenced your writing? Probably the book that influenced me the most is A Wrinkle in Time. I read it more than a dozen times as a kid, and here I am still writing sci-fi romance mashups. (Though the romance in WiT was light, and suitable for a middle […]

Review: They Call Me Crazy + Giveaway

This was a quick mystery story that is filled with very unique characters in a very small town. With a different narrator for every chapter, it does take a while to really get a grasp on everything that is happening, but the focus is mostly on Cass and finding out whether she actually killed her husband, and whether he deserved it. The plotline is fairly straight forward, but there are enough secrets and twists to keep a reader interested. There is a lot of charm in the story. It really highlights how small towns think and interact. You really can`t […]
