An assassin has come to Ashland to murder Gin Blanco, the renowned killer known as the Spider. Ever since she declared war on Mab Monroe, the ruthless head of the Ashland underworld, she's had a target on her back. Mab wants her dead in the worst kind of way, which is why she's hired Elektra LaFleur. LaFleur is just as ruthless as Gin, and has electrical elemental magic that equals Gin's Ice and Stone power. Complicating matters is the fact that Mab's kidnapped an innocent young girl. For Gin, finding her is priority number one…but surviving is a close second.

The more books I read (or listen to as I love the audiobooks) in this series, the more I realize that Gin is a big softie. She may be an accomplished and feared assassin, but she’s fiercely loyal to people she cares about, and she has a strong need for justice. It’s a unique characteristic in her line of work, and means that she seems to spend more time taking care of people and saving the underdog than she does doing strictly pay-for-hire jobs. It makes her character quite likeable.

Another character I really like is Owen. He’s so sweet and genuine and accepting of Gin. She’s slowly beginning to trust him, and he’s so patient and good for her. It feels like a slow build to a great relationship.

This installment had a contained plot, but it also had some great series development. Overall, the series so far does a great job balancing the two, and it makes me want to read on right away.

As always, the narration was spot on, and it’s hard to imagine reading the actual book rather than listening to the audio version. The narration adds an extra layer to the series that only enhances the experience.

There were some developments in this book that I can’t wait to see unfurl in future books. I can sense a big confrontation coming, and it will be interesting to see what happens on the way. I’ll definitely be reading on to find out.
