Welcome to the world of grim reaper extraordinaire Charley Davidson. Try as she might, there’s no avoiding her destiny.
Sometimes being the grim reaper really is, well, grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple of months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above...or at least get dressed. It becomes clear something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. But the more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.
In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved.
Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans in this hilarious fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling series.
Oh, Charley, how I adore your antics. You may be having a hard time coping with the events from the last book, but once things start happening, you have a knack for ending up right in the middle of things. Often with a quip on your lips and a solution brewing in your head.
Similar to previous books, this one had several plotlines criss-crossing and intersecting, with Charley being the focal point. Everything builds to exciting resolutions, with several new threads being spun out to come into play in the next book. Charley’s main case in this story involves a woman who has been terrorized since she was a child, and you won’t believe some of the reveals that happen. There was one that just blew me away! It had me flipping back to see if I could or should have guessed it because I definitely didn’t.
Looking at the known characters, I was slightly disappointed by both the biker gang and Garrett. Mainly that neither got more page time. After the events of the last book, I was hoping to see them more in this one, but alas, it was not to be. Hopefully Garrett has a bigger role in the next book because he really is my favourite character next to Charley.
Overall, this series cements itself in my heart with every book I read. This volume had us seeing Charley in a vulnerable position, and it just made me love her more. As usual, the humour was on point and fabulous. This is definitely a series I’d highly recommend.
