Darla Edmunds has faced a lot of challenges in her seventeen years: Her dad died in a farming accident when she was fourteen. Her mother retreated into hyper-religiosity, leaving Darla to run the family farm almost single-handedly. But those struggles pale in comparison to the one she faces after the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, plummeting the world--and Darla's small corner of Iowa--into a cataclysmic natural disaster.
This is a short story that introduced Darla, and detailed her experience during and just after the volcanic eruption.
Darla is very resourceful, and it was fun learning what her personality was like before she met Alex. Not that she changed, but since Ashfall was definitely about Alex, it was nice to learn about her when she was in her own element.
Overall, this was a good introduction to a strong female character, and was a fun way to spend a few hours dipping back into the Ashfall world while waiting for the final book to be released.
