My name’s Kate Kane, and when an eight-hundred-year-old vampire prince came to me with a case, I should have told her no. But I’ve always been a sucker for a femme fatale.
It always goes the same way. You move too fast, you get in too deep, and before you know it, someone winds up dead. Last time it was my partner. This time it could be me. Yesterday a werewolf was murdered outside the Velvet, the night-time playground of one of the most powerful vampires in England. Now half the monsters in London are at each other’s throats, and the other half are trying to get in my pants. The Witch Queen will protect her own, the wolves are out for vengeance, and the vampires are out for, y’know, blood.
I’ve got a killer on the loose, a war on the horizon, and a scotch on the rocks. It’s going to be an interesting day.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This is a dark and gritty Urban Fantasy story about a half-Fae PI who is hired to investigate the murder of a werewolf outside a vampire bar. The book has a lot of elements I say I don’t review, like tons of profanity (mostly f-bombs) and some graphic sex (of the lesbian variety), but it was still very enjoyable, in a kickass paranormal with lots of humour way.
The element that made the book great, and made the profanity and sex fade into the story, was the attitude of the main character. Kate is sarcastic and snarky, and isn’t afraid to use humour at all times, whether it’s appropriate or not. Her voice was realistic, and very entertaining.
Told in the first person, this book would make an awesome audiobook, provided the narrator was a strong woman with a deep, sexy voice that knows how to emphasize snark. At least, that’s what Kate sounds like in my head. And she is awesome to listen to there.
The first in a series, I can’t wait for the next book, because the misadventures she had in this one will be extremely hard to top. Even if the excitement level isn’t exceeded, I hope Kate’s voice and attitude remain strong, and that we get to see as many quirky and crazy secondary characters. Overall, I’d strongly recommend this book, just be warned that it is a very adult story.
