Fed up with her wild behavior, sixteen-year-old Lex’s parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort’s true occupation is much dirtier than shoveling manure. He’s a Grim Reaper. And he’s going to teach Lex the family business.

She quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. But Lex can’t stop her desire for justice—or is it vengeance?—whenever she encounters a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. Will she ditch Croak and go rogue with her reaper skills?

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This is an awesomely funny, laugh-out-loud story filled with dark sarcastic humour. It is the perfect YA story to pick up when you’re getting sick of the normal YA drama.

While the action is exciting and original, it’s the characters that got to me. Everyone is uniquely intriguing, and is a rightful “character”. My favourite is Driggs. Oh Driggs, you’re so funny and amusing. I loved that he and Lex actually threw punches and were constantly bickering. The tension was awesome to watch, and I kept waiting for things to explode between them. It was quite natural and amusing. Almost like a train wreck, but much more entertaining.

I love everything about this story, except maybe the cliffhanger ending. The main story is mostly wrapped up, but what happens right at the end is just shocking. I can’t believe it, it’s just cruel to Lex and the reader.

Overall, this book was awesome. I flew through it and am so happy I have the second one to pick up right away. I am already excited for the 3rd book coming out this fall, and must get my hands on it. This is such an original and entertaining concept, and so well executed. I’d definitely recommend you pick it up the next time you need a giggle or two.

  1. I LOVE THIS SERIES. Can’t wait for book 3! So soon! 🙂

  2. This was one of those books that I thought would be ok but not great so I was pleasantly surprised when I LOVED it. Especially the back and forth between Diggs and Lex. Glad you enjoyed it too!
