Today I have an interview with SB Sebrick, author of the Assassin’s Rising series, a YA epic fantasy featuring demons and assassins. Exciting!
What’s the hardest part of writing a book?
The hardest part of writing a novel or especially a series is knowing your limits as a writer. When I finished the third Kaltor book, my brain was all assassin’d out (yes, it’s possible after eight months to get tired of one on-going story). So I wrote a couple zombie books until I felt ready to tackle Kaltor’s next book, Desolate.
Now that I’m continuing Kaltor’s series, I’m writing a few short stories in between each book to give my brain a break. That way I can jump on the next novel within weeks, instead of months.
What inspired you to become a writer?
I first caught the fever in fifth grade, during math class of all places. Our teacher decided to teach us percents and multiplication by calculating the royalties of R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps series. After that, I was hooked on the idea. I loved the thought of producing a product you can eventually convert into paperback, audio, movie and now e-book formats, while making money each step of the way.
Do you have a writing routine?
I break a novel down into small pieces and do a bit every day. I plan an outline so I don’t get lost and write one chapter a day. Within a month, my next novel is ready for editing and revising. It takes a lot of discipline, but I believe if we approach most of life’s problems in this manner (just a bit each day), issues we find overwhelming will melt away, one day at a time.
Do you write your book from page 1 to the end, or do you jump around?
I usually write in chronological order, making notes as I go for things I want to fix on the second run through. By the time I send a novel to my mentor, I’ve done two drafts of it. By the time it gets back from my editor, it’s gone through four.
Anything else you would like to add?
I maintain a monthly newsletter called the ‘E-List’ through which I keep in touch with my readers. Members of the ‘E-List’ gain access to special deals, author information and extra content before it becomes available in bookstores. It doesn’t cost anything to get on, just email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) and I’ll add you to the list. So, check out Decoy and if it’s to your liking feel free to join our ‘E-List’ family.
I spent most of my childhood and teen years living in Vancouver, Washington (No that’s not the capital and no, I’m not Canadian) but I have also lived in Utah, New York and Argentina. I have a fascination with Epic Fantasy and have alot of books in mind for this genre before I move on to other ones. I’ve spent years writing as a hobby and am taking my first steps towards a writing career by self-publishing “Decoy” as an E-Book.
Some of my favorite works to read are Robert Jordan’s’ “Wheel of Time” Series and Brandon Sanderson’s “Mistborn Trilogy”. I love the opportunity to create a completely different world and magic structure that I’ve only found fully explorable through writing fantasy.
The last few grueling years of training have served Kaltor well. He’s learned to harness the magic within his body, overcome a stronger opponent, avoid capture, and everything else an assassin-in-training needs to survive.
Or so he thought.
But when those they protect at an excavation site release a demon from the Abyss itself, Kaltor realizes just how poorly prepared they all are for what’s coming. Within a single night, their mining camp of one thousand people plummets to a couple hundred terrified survivors, the majority turned against each other by the demon’s potent abilities. Then he turns towards Shaylis, the largest city in the region, for the next stage of his plan.
In a constant battle of both steel and strategy Kaltor and his friends struggle to delay, deceive and defeat their opponent, who’s spent the last thousand years planning out every detail of her assault to perfection. As the number of casualties mounts and her final plan comes to light, Kaltor is left with only one option. He must draw on the secret power within himself, knowing if his true identity is discovered, his life and the fate of the world, will be changed forever.
